Robert Ivy Achieves Lifetime Success

Robert Ivy, Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Institute of Architects, received the Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award by the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters.

His award will be the first Polk Award given to an architect. The Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters (MIAL) presidents Nancy LaForge stated that Robert Ivy was like no one else in the state. He is the one person who makes architecture more accessible to the public. She claimed that receiving this award and taking a place among the list of Noel Polk Award honorees is Ivy’s rightful place.

Robert Ivy has been the CEO of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) since 2011 and is an author, editor, and practicing architect. This alone makes him a worthy ambassador of the architectural profession. Since he joined AIA, Robert Ivy has done everything in his power to expand the presence and influence of the company to a global level. It is currently at its highest level of memberships in over 160 years.

The Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award is given to those people living Mississippi whom are connected to artists, and patrons of the arts, and whose body of works over their lifetime is extraordinary and worthy of the special honor. Ivy joins this short list of artists that includes the writer Eudora Welty, the writer Shelby Foote, the artist Walter Anderson, the singer Leontyne Price and even the actor Morgan Freeman.

Before joining the American Institute of Architects, Ivy was the editor in chief of McGraw Hill’s Architectural Record. Under his leadership, the Architectural Record was distributed across the globe and received many awards, including one for general excellence. Ivy was also responsible for the design and construction of McGraw Hill during its growth. He even was able to launch a mandarin version of Architecture Record.

With Ivy’s help, the architects in the American Institute of Architects, are practicing around the world. They are helped by the seven different worldwide chapters of AIA, and two new chapters have opened in China and Canada.

Robert Ivy has a Bachelor of Arts in English from Sewanee: The University of the South. He also obtained a Master of Architecture from Tulane University. Before becoming an architect he was also a member of the United States Navy. Ivy is clearly an exceptional man in the architect world.
